Yazdani Bakery, Fort

if you just want to take a feel of an old traditional cafe without bothering yourself about the food,go to this place.Amazingly large bread loafs is what you will notice first and then probably the pictures of the german weightlifters on the wall.As many have already said brun maska with butter dropping down from the corners is a speciality.Have it with the chai and you will not look for heaven elsewhere.Want to buy something delicious for your family as a souvenir?? ginger cookies will be the answer.and if you are really lucky you will definitely find the cricket enthusiasts on the road beside Central bank. That will certainly make your day.

Cafe Excelsior, Fort

I am very fond of visiting old foodie places and have been exploring a lot many traditional cafes since a couple of weekends. On one of the sunday's I happened to come across this place.Located just opposite to New Excelsior cinema in a not so crowdy street it gives a typical look of an iranian cafe, for which Mumbai is so renowned. The board itself carries the catchy line "Estd. 1919".
Once you enter the cafe you will find it very different from what you must have been imagining, unlike pre-independence cafes such as Yazdani.A small but cozy place with beautiful layout and menu painted on the mirrors and the walls.
I experimented Excelsior for the sake of breakfast and wasn't disappointed for sure.Cheese Omelette with butter toasts complimented with the Rich Beans flavoured coffee is something you'll die for. There is an old saying "when you are in Rome behave like romans".Same goes with the parsi hang outs also.If you dont order something like cutlets they will get offended and moreover your journey will not be fruitful. At excelsior they serve you all sorts of cutlets in the morning ranging from veg to mutton and chicken. These tasty cutlets drowned in the spicy curry and served with the slices of loafed bread is a specialty of the place, the kind of which is difficult to find even in a place like Mondegar. When you are done with your appetite go for the Chai that is not so milky, that is not herbal, that is not the masala chai but whatever it is,it is very special.
I am sure you will enjoy this place specially when you find yourself watching cricket at the azad maidan on a bright sunday morning with lanes beside Tata house devoid of the crowd.I will not say this place is one for which even a night out is affordable but definitely the taste and ambiance will give you some satisfaction. And above all the service offered by the owner Mr.Adi Mazkoori and team is commendable.
Overall I will say Excelsior cafe is a must go place, atleast once.
